This article is about a/an fanfictional series entry (1st) in the Kamen Rider Series. |
Kamen Rider Wisp (仮面ライダーウィスプ Kamen Raidā U~isupu?) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in Toei Company's Kamen Rider Series. It is the first series in the Topaz Era. The series is a crossover with another company, in this case, SEGA, and has one of its characters as the main protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog. With this, it's the first time where Kamen Rider crosses over with another franchise, outside of Tokusatsu, in terms of a TV series.
On July 6th, 2020, it was announced that everything Kamen Rider Wisp-related would be delayed by two months, due to slow progress on the main series. After multiple delays, the series is planned to air on September 5th, 2021; the same date as the premiere of Kamen Rider Revice.
Plot
Sonic the Hedgehog, a video game character debuting in 1991, is celebrating his birthday in his world. All of his friends, from Planet Wisp to his closest friends, even some of his rivals, have come to celebrate. However, it's interrupted by the Eggman Empire, as it captured his friends, while Sonic is sent back to an unknown place, along with the Rookie, and Yacker.
After being given an unpleasant welcome, Rookie gives Sonic a driver and some Wisp capsules. Sonic takes up the mantle of a new rider, named Kamen Rider Wisp, to rescue his friends and must learn to adapt to the new world.

Trivia
- This is the first Kamen Rider series of the Topaz Era.
- This marks the first Kamen Rider where pre-established characters (mainly from video games and anime) serve as the main protagonists.
Development
Kamen Rider Wisp originally started as an anniversary season, starting back in 2019. It would've been the 50th anniversary show of Kamen Rider and lasted for around 70 episodes, airing from at least 2020 to 2023 (at most). However, production costs and lack of unique ideas to differentiate it from Kamen Rider Zi-O (2018-2019) caused it to be delayed many times. If it came out on time, it would've been too similar to the aforementioned series. However, there are elements of Zi-O that made it to the current state of Wisp:
- The idea of Another Riders were recycled for Dr. Eggman's Badnik Riders, being based on the original riders they were based on. Unlike Zi-O, it can also be based on other non-Primary Riders.
- GrandZi-O's gimmick of summoning past Kamen Riders is used for Wisp's Final Fusion Form, which combines all of the forms he has.
- Past riders and allies appear to support the main riders. However, because not every episode is a tribute episode, these comebacks are more spread out and are used to help advance the characters.
Casting
- Main article: Kamen Rider Wisp casting calls
Due to the troubled production history mentioned above, the casting calls weren't sent out, as it was assumed that the current voice cast would reprise their roles in the show. However, since January 2021, the current voice cast has faced some uncertainty, due to Netflix's Sonic Prime (2022) and characters being absent in recent times, it was very confusing on who was playing who in the new show.
However, it was announced by ShadicMCGS that his company, Topaz Central, and Toei Company would be funding and casting their own voice cast for the first series. They've collectively stated that this may be a one-time thing, due to cost issues and the way SEGA handles their voice casts. SEGA did approve of this, due to it being a different interpretation of the franchise that still carried their vision, and because of the multiverse concept from Sonic Prime, it could easily be considered as an alternate universe.
